Seafood paradise of Sabah

If you are planning a trip to the Land Below the Wind for the on-going Harvest Festival, don’t miss the chance to check out its lip-smacking seafood spread.

FLANKED by two of the most fertile seas in the world – South China Sea in the west and the Sulu Sea in the east – Sabah has been known as a seafood paradise among aficionados for years.

Seafood comprising all sorts of fish, prawns, squid, shellfish and sea cucumber has become the mainstay in menus at the seemingly countless of restaurants and eateries in Kota Kinabalu and other major coastal towns of Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu and Semporna.

Whether steamed, stir-fried, stewed, deep-fried and or made into soups, Sabah’s seafood is known for its freshness and for offering the best value for the ringgit.

Seafood also figure prominently in the diet of Sabah’s ethnic communities.

With the month-long Ka’amatan or Harvest Festival celebrations being held now in the various districts around the state, this is the perfect time to try out some of these specialities.

A good place to start is with the Kadazandusun’s unique dishes. Among the most well-known ethnic dish is hinava often described as the Kadazandusun version of the sashimi or raw fish as tenggiri fish or Spanish mackerel slices are marinated in lime juice, ginger and onions.

One of the few eateries in Sabah offering such ethnic dishes is the J Borneo (Native Village) located just adjacent to the Sabah Wildlife Park at Lok Kawi, about 25km from Kota Kinabalu.
