Kuching Waterfront - hive of activities

KUCHING: The Kuching Waterfront was a hive of activities of all sorts, ranging from cultural demonstrations and joget competition to sales of local delicacies, besides the Sarawak Regatta.

There were so many different activities held at the same time. At different sections of the Waterfront, emcees trying their best to get the attention and participation of the spectators.

The main organiser of Malaysias Crafts Promotion 2009 (Education), Udaidah Haji Suhaili, said that this year, there seemed to be more visitors and participants to various activities organised at the Waterfront.

He estimated 30,000 to 50,000 people came to the Kuching Waterfront to witness the Sarawak Regatta and other events yesterday.

According to Udaidah, the response to the Malaysian Crafts Promotion had been very positive and the bail workshop had 180 participants since it was first held on July 25.

The food stalls along the Waterfront were constantly busy with customers and experienced brisk business.

Apart from Kuching Waterfront, Main Bazaar was lined with stalls with white canopies. Endless demonstrations on handicraft-making, such as Penan carving, Pua Kumbu weaving, and pandang-weaving were held for those who were interested in culture, arts and crafts.

Borneo International Kite Fest

BINTULU - The 5th Borneo International Kite Festival is currently being held at Bintulu old airport until Aug 9 this year. The big event is expected to attract at least 3,000 guests and visitors.

It is jointly organised by Bintulu Development Authority, Malaysia Kites Union, Sarawak Kites Union, tourism organisations and various government departments. More than 200 kite participants have enrolled their names from 15 foreign countries, as well as West and East Malaysia.

The overseas countries include Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Brunei, China and Germany.

The kite festival includes a kite-flying competition, a kite-making contest and many more activities. This also marks the festival's fifth year.

Fairy Cave at Kuching, Sarawak Borneo

The Fairy Caves are located about 50 km from Kuching Town and getting here is quite easy considering you take a guide with you. The caves are about 8km to the nearest town called Bau which used to be a gold mining town back in the day. The Fairy Cave is also known as Gua Kapor in Malay.

The trip to the Fairy Caves are quite scenic where you will pass various pepper plantations, local villages and lots of greenery. Make sure you stop at Bau Town to stock up on water and snacks as there is absolutely nothing there at the fairy caves. Also, make your toilet stop at town too as there are no toilets at the caves.

The Fairy Cave seems to have been given a revamp as there are walkways and concrete staircases made for tourists or local who go there. I asked Selvem why the Sarawak Government has not paid any attention to these caves here and even he did not know how to answer me. It is a unique cave within Kuching but is not promoted. Seems like the government made the signboards but never really followed up.

The capital of Sabah in the year 1882 used to be Kudat. Two years later, it was moved to the east side of the country, Sandakan as Kudat was experiencing a water shortage.

Tourists wishing to visit Kudat can do so by taking a two-hour journey from Kota Kinabalu.

Tanjung Simpang Mengayau or the Tip of Borneo is a major tourist attraction. Clear waters and clean beaches, various islands and lighthouses can be found here.

On the way to Kudat, we saw oil palm plantations as far as the eye can see.

Sea products as well as handicrafts are sold on the side of the road.

The journey did not feel long as there were a number of stalls selling fruits, juices and handicrafts at the side of the road.

One can find a number of places to stay in Kudat. The lodgings are quite cheap ranging from RM50 to RM60 per night. Food can be found at relatively low prices too.
