Ranau: The Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) will propose to the State Government to turn the annual Nunuk Ragang visit in conjunction with the Huguan Siou's (Paramount Leader) anniversary into a State celebration.
Its President, Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan, said the proposal to elevate the event's status to Pesta Nunuk Ragang merits consideration as it would ensure it gets attention from the State Government just like other festivals.
Among the festivals that are in the calendar of the State Government are the Coconut Festival, Rumbia Festival and Cocoa Festival.
"It deserves to be considered either from the cultural or festive perspective," he said when met during the Huguan Siou's 22nd anniversary celebration at the Nunuk Ragang Monument in Kampung Tompios, about 54km from here, Saturday.
The 11th Nunuk Ragang visit ritual was held a day earlier.
Pairin, who is the second modern day Huguan Siou, said the event was related to the tourism industry and he believed the event can be included as part of the tourism package for people visiting the district.
"This will further spice up the tourism attraction in Ranau and the whole of Sabah. We want more foreign tourists to visit Ranau. The Nunuk Ragang Monument can be included in the Mt Kinabalu tour package," he said.
On the status of the KDCA's application for the land where the Nunuk Ragang Monument is located, Pairin, who is also a Deputy Chief Minister, said they were still waiting for the outcome.
"Actually we have some ideas, using slightly different approaches (to develop the land) and we will bring this up to the Chief Minister and we hope it would be given due consideration," he said.
He added that the approach would, among others, assist in the development of tourism as well as agriculture.
Earlier in his speech, Pairin said the Nunuk Ragang area is significant for the Kadazandusun community, as it is the place where, according to legend, their ancestors originated.
He said the community should take advantage of this by promoting it to the outside world as one of the unique tourism products in Sabah.
Among those in attendance were Resource Development and IT Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, who was the guest-of-honour, and KDCA leaders.
