BEIJING -- More than three dozen planeloads of tourists from mainland China are spending their holidays in Malaysia during the coming Chinese New Year celebration.
A check with Tourism Malaysia offices in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing showed that some 7,000 tourists on 38 chartered flights are heading for island and resort destinations such as Langkawi, Penang, Tanjung Jara, Nexus Karambunai in Sabah, Melaka and also, Kuala Lumpur.
The lunar spring festival is a week-long holiday in China and increasing affluent Chinese are travelling outside their country. Last year, a record 34.5 million mainlanders travelled abroad and 29 per cent or nearly 10 million were tourists.
Malaysia remains one of the top 10 destinations for Chinese travellers.
Suhaimi Shaharuddin, director of Tourism Malaysia in Guangzhou, said about 31 planeloads of more than 6,000 holiday-makers from southern China would travel to Malaysia between Feb 17 and 26.
"This time, the most favoured destination is Sabah, especially to Kota Kinabalu and Nexus Karambunai Resort. We have been promoting Visit Malaysia Year 2007 heavily and the packages are attractive from 4,500 yuan (RM2,030.81) to 5,000 yuan (RM2,256.46) for a four-day stay," he said.
