KOTA KINABALU: A little-known legend of a Bajau Kabang maiden was the highlight at the launch of Sabah Fest here.
The Legendary Quest for Arung Salamiah was told using a series of traditional Sabah ethnic dances that lasted for more than an hour.
The legend tells the story of Salamiah, a betrothed maiden of exceptional beauty and grace, who disappeared and was pursued across Sabah by her sweetheart Tanjung Kalang after a powerful chieftain attempted to force her into marriage.
Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman, state ministers, various community leaders, tourists and the public attended the annual cultural event, which was launched by Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah at the Sutera Harbour Resort last Sunday.
This year’s performances showcased some of the state’s lesser-known ethnic communities including the Bajau Kabang, a Murut sub-ethnic group from Kalabakan in south-east Sabah, and the Tidong from Tawau.
