Inaugural Penan Cultural Festival for July 2011

MIRI: ‘A Battle of the Wheels’ – a vehicular competition alongside Penan Cultural Festival has been proposed for July next year at the Tenyok Rimba Community Resort (TRCR) in Long Bedian, Baram.

It is to create greater awareness especially among the international communities on the cultures and traditions of the Penan and at the same time promoting the vast tourism potentials in the Baram District.

The Tropical Adventure Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd, the official promoter for the Resort, had been entrusted to coordinate and organise the two events.

Its director of marketing, Richard Hii, told the Borneo Post yesterday they expected to attract 5,000 visitors including those from overseas to the inaugural festival and the vehicular competition.

“Our aim is to promote tourism potentials in Baram District especially right from the Loagan Bunut National Park, Long Lama, Long Bedian, Tenyok Rimba Community Resort, the Mount Mulong/Bukit Song/Gunung Belenggang Nature Reserve and the famous world heritage site – the Mulu National Park.

“The rugged terrain including the muddy as well as gravel and timber roads are ideal for adventure races for vehicles with four-wheel drive, motorcross, mountain bike and BMX bicycle,” he said.

Richard said the competition was open to both foreigners and locals who were interested in extreme sports and at the same time wanting to know more about the Penans as well as other orang Ulu tribes in Baram such as the Kayan and Berawan.

He added that the Sarawak Tourism Board, STB, had entrusted us in organising the events and we had assurances from at least four international organisers in Australia, Canada, US and Italy to assist us in organising the events.
