THE Sibu Heritage Centre Museum is now expected to receive good response from locals as well as foreign tourists due to its stategic location at the central business district of the town.
Previously the exhibits and artefacts were housed in the Civic Centre mini museum but as it was about 10km away from the town, people were either unaware of it or have problems getting there. The museum had recorded an average of 10,000 visitors per year at its old location.
The new museum, which was opened yesterday by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, is located at the old administrative building of the Sibu Municipal Council which has undergone refurbishment costing RM5mil. The building itself was built in 1962.
With a wider space and proper set-up, it provides a more conducive environment for visitors to view all the exhibits.
There are specific corners for different items which include the sections for schools, history of Sibu, the Malay, Chinese, Iban and Melanau communities, trade and commerce.
The museum is on the first floor of the building. Walking in from the staircase, one would be greeted by the busts of famous personalities, including founder of Sibu, Wong Nai Siong, and Teo Chong Loh and Teng Kung Shook who were both pioneer settlers from China in 1900s.
A walk round the museum resembles a walk back in time as most of the exhibits are very old — some even more than 100 years old.
Priceless ancient relics of the Chinese such as sewing machine, copper frying pans, jars, tree bark rain coats and others are among items that would catch the attention of visitors.
