KOTA KINABALU: The United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) should consider the need for developing a mechanism to promote technology transfer in green tourism, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said green tourism not only promotes economic growth by attracting foreign investors but also helps in preserving the natural environment which requires the latest technology to disseminate information for the benefit of the world.
“As tourism has a high inter-industry linkage, the promotion of the “green” initiative will also benefit all parties in terms of development of green technology, conservation of the national resources and minimising the negative impact on the environment as a result of tourism activities,” he said while officiating at the opening of the World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2010 here, yesterday.
At the same time, he said, emphasis should also be given on measures to uplift standards of occupational skill and competency, as well as promoting best practices in green tourism.
In line with the objective to achieve balanced and sustainable development, he added that tourism players should aim to adopt green technologies and best practices in tourism to resolve adverse environmental issues frequently attributed to tourist inflow.
And in view of its potential as a driver in generating new areas of growth and in promoting sustainable development, he called for due emphasis to be given in promoting ecotourism technology.
