Miri: The 12-kilometre stretch of white beach along Kuala Baram Road will soon get a facelift with the construction of a new esplanade and recreational facilities to attract visitors.
According to Miri city mayor Lawrence Lai, Land and Survey Department has approved the area for development that will cost between RM4 million and RM 5 million.
“This will give the folks in Miri and visitors another new recreational spot by the seaside in addition to the current popular Luak Bay Esplanade and Tanjong Lobang (Taman Selera) that will continue to be enhanced, to give visitors more choices of activities when they visit the area,” he told The Borneo Post Adventure Team (BAT) yesterday.
Lai added that the area to be developed is famous for fishermen to set up their stalls to sell their catch from the sea.
“The fishermen’s market at Batu Satu (Mile One) along Kuala Baram will also be part of the development and once completed will not only attract visitors, but provide a more appropriate place to sell their sea products, he enthused.
“At the moment the area is already popular in selling shrimps or prawn paste from ‘bubuk’,” added Lai.
He also revealed that the city of Miri has many beaches that can be further developed into recreational spots and tourist attractions, and it is just a matter of time as most of the beaches are very accessible.
Meanwhile, Lai also disclosed that more would be done to enhance the Luak Bay Esplanade as the beach has very basic facilities.
