KUCHING: The gastronomical journey around the world by Rachel Peh has led to the birth of Safari Grill & Western Cuisine (Safari), an open concept dining restaurant which serve’s among the top in-house specialties in Kuching.
The term ‘Safari’ used in this context does not imply the theme of the food served.
Rather, it represents the culinary adventure that it promises to its patrons.
“Food Safari aims to give its patrons a memorable adventure via its wide selection of cuisines,” Peh told The Borneo Post in an interview.
“We choose the name ‘safari’ as the term meant ‘to travel’ based on its original Kiswahili origin.
“We figured that this name fits the theme we wanted to present to our customers as we plan to bring them for a gastronomic adventure and show them the taste and culture that we’ve accumulated through the years as these experiances were the main inspiration for the creation of this restaurant,” she added.
The restaurant saw an investment of over RM300,000, taking up two shoplots along Jalan Mendu facing the main road.
Since its inception on June 15 this year, it had served many satisfied patrons and had gained a small cult status from Kuching’s food lovers.
It houses eight to 10 different types of local main courses with wide varieties of side orders to choose from.
“What makes us different is the ‘localisation’ of the dishes.
Although the dishes’ ideas came from all over the world, we customised the dishes to suit local taste.” According to Peh, there are five chefs at any one time handling the kitchen to ensure quality as well as presentation.
“Maintaining the quality and quantity of the ingredients are the key to finest taste.
“I emphasise a lot on the freshness of each dish and this could sometimes mean a slightly longer waiting time as compared to most restaurants around.
“However, I feel that there should be no leeway given to quality as I feel that it is my duty to provide the best dining experience I could offer,” she highlighted.
Peh said her main aim was to produce something unique which is up to international standards but she also admitted that being fresh does not neccesarily mean expensive all the time.
Price-wise, Safari comes with reasonable price for a mid-range western restaurants.
