KUCHING: Bako-Buntal Bay has been inscribed on the East Asian – Australasian Flyway Site Network and is the first flyway network established in Malaysia.
Announcing this, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said he was happy to see that the state’s conservation of migratory water birds had resulted in the international recognition.
“Bako-Buntal Bay is one of the wintering sites for migratory water birds yearly.
“The recognition has put us on the world map and this is indeed good for Sarawak tourism,” he said.
Calling on the people not to pollute the environment, particularly along the coast where the birds feed, he hoped that more migratory water birds would make Sarawak their home during the winter each year.
Taib said this when officiating at Sarawak Forestry Corporation’s (SFC) ninth anniversary dinner here on Friday.
He said the government, along with stakeholders, must strike a balance between development and forest and wildlife conservation management.
“Don’t be carried away by conservation alone,” the chief minister said.
Citing an example, he asked if the Government should protect the people’s lives or conserve crocodiles first.
