SANTUBONG: The inaugural Damai Food Fest (DFF) to be held at Damai Beach Resort from May 5 to 6 will be a gastronomic treat for locals and tourists alike.
The much awaited event is jointly organised by the resort, the village folks of nearby Kampung Santubong and Kuching popular food operators.
“It will be an exciting event for both the local folks and tourists alike because only the best of Sarawak’s signature dishes and delicacies will be made available throughout the two-day event,” said the organising committee chairman, Zulkifli Othman.
“We are organising the food fest because there is a demand for it and it is a good avenue for local food operators to showcase the best of Sarawak food,” he added.
Zulkifli, who is also general manager of Damai Beach Resort, pointed out the event could possibly attract city folks especially tourists to come over to Damai to try out the delicious local food.
According to him, among the popular local food that will be available are Sarawak Laksa, Kolo Mee, Ayam Pansuh, Umai, Linut and a wide array of mouth-watering delicacies.
Assistant Minister for Sarawak Tourism, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who is also chairman of Sarawak SEDC, and local dignitaries are expected to grace the event.
“But, of course, we will also be featuring other side activities such as traditional dances and music performances by nearby kampung folks to complement the carnival like atmosphere,” he said on activities that will feature folks from Santubong, Buntal and Sungei Lumut.
They are expected to showcase traditional performances like bergendang, bermukum, joget dances, singing competition and a cooking competition.
Kampong style beach activities and games like coconut bowling and blowpipe competition are also to be held with attractive prizes for the winners.
SEDC owned hotels Grand Margherita Hotel, Riverside Majestic Hotel and Damai Beach Resort as well as Sarawak Cultural Village are also offering popular signature dishes at hawker prices during the food festival.
Zulkifli said the involvement of the business community operating in Santubong and its vicinity is also encouraged in an effort to promote and develop the food fest into a tourism product beneficial to the industry.
