Kaamatan a symbol of harmony

KOTA BELUD: CHIEF Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman launched a month-long Pesta Kaamatan here yesterday as he continued his tour across the state in the race to the May 5 polls.

Musa joined the Huguan Siou or Kadazandusun paramount leader Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan in cutting seven stalks of rice to mark the beginning of the harvest festival, which will be celebrated in all districts of the state before culminating in the state-level celebration in Penampang at the end of the month.

Musa said the festival reminded people in the state of peace and harmony as well as the importance of the agricultural sector, especially on modern methods to meet the growing demand for food.

"This is a unique and significant celebration in Sabah and the Barisan Nasional state government has always given its utmost respect towards the needs of the indigenous communities and to preserve their culture and tradition."

He was joined by BN candidate for the Kota Belud parliamentary seat, Datuk Rahman Dahlan, and BN candidates for the Tempasuk and Usukan state seats, Datuk Musbah Jamli and Datuk Seri Salleh Said.

Musa later launched the Usukan Bay Oil and Gas Support Industry Centre, a project that will create more than 1,000 employment opportunities.

The project will also help push for development in the industry and produce more skilled workers.
