Sabah International Cultural Carnival: Vital to preserve cultural heritage of various ethnic group

KOTA KINABALU: The state Education Department fully supports making the International Cultural Carnival as an annual event to further promote tourism in the state.

State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip said this was important in order to preserve the cultural heritage of various ethnic groups in the country.

“Culture represents the identity of a country but the traditional cultural heritage of our country is being lost to modernisation.

“Therefore, efforts to organise the International Cultural Carnival would provide a good foundation for us to elevate our arts and culture to the national and even the international arena,” he said.

Jame was speaking at the closing of the International Cultural Carnival 2014 at the Sabah Trade Centre here, yesterday.

The inaugural carnival was organised by the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Gaya, a high performance school and participated by seven schools, namely Sekolah Indonesia Kota Kinabalu, SK Ulu Lubai Limbang Sarawak, SK Zainab 2 Kota Baharu Kelantan, SK Tengku Ampuan Intan Kuala Berang Terengganu, SK Minden Height Gelugor Pulau Pinang and SK Convent Kota Taiping Perak.

Jame said the participation of these schools showed their desire and determination to introduce as well as to share and learn the cultures of other states.

He hoped that the carnival would be held next year in collaboration with various government departments and agencies including the Sabah Museum, National Department for Culture and Arts Sabah and the Tourism Ministry.
