Inaugural Sarawak Rainforest World Puppet Carnival not to be missed

KUCHING: The inaugural Rainforest World Puppet Carnival kicks off yesterday with representatives from countries all over the world, converging on the state capital from yesterday until Nov 6.

Among countries participating in the five-day event are Argentina, Japan, Finland, Australia, Singapore, Bulgaria, Turkey, Belgium, France, Poland and Malaysia.

According to Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip, the event is a venue for those with the same interest to build lifelong friendships between puppeteers, and also with citizens of Kuching and Sarawak.

“Puppetry is a platform where we can let our children learn as there are ways to educate them by means of using puppets,” said Talib at the opening of the carnival held at Sarawak Tourism Complex yesterday.

Talib added that back in the heydays, ‘Wayang Kulit’ was also a means to teach and disseminate information on folklore, culture and local issues and it is undeniable that puppetry is a creative way to educate and express feelings and emotion.

Earlier on, World Arts Convention chairman Gerald Goh urged parents to bring their children and family to enjoy the daily puppet shows to be held at the State Tourism Complex.
