SIBU: Sarawak will continue to collaborate with other airlines instead of relying on MASwings and Malaysia Airlines Berhad to bolster its air connectivity.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also Minister of Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture, said collaborations would not stop with Hong Kong Airlines, which recently started its Kuching-HK route.
“(For instance) an airline from Taiwan has expressed interest to fly here. We are still negotiating,” he told reporters after representing Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem to officiate at the closing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Nangka’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2016 open house at MUC hall here yesterday.
Sarawak and Sabah have been negotiating with MAS to takeover MASwing, but so far nothing has come out of it.
“We don’t want to get involved in this sort of uncertainty, so (we) might as well go direct. What we do is mount collaborations with other airlines.”
Asked on the possibility of a direct Sibu-HK route in view of Visit Sibu Year 2017, he replied it depended very much on economic viability.
