MIRI: Malindo Air is committed to improve air connectivity in Sarawak and consequently help develop the economy and the tourism industry.
Giving the assurance, Malindo Air chief commercial officer Dato Bernard Francis said the airline is satisfied with the current 80 per cent passenger load for its Miri/KL sector, and they will increase the frequency if the need arise.
“We are determined to help develop Sarawak particularly Miri and for this we are prepared to start soon the chartered flight from Miri to Wuhan, Hubei Province in China when Miri is ready.
“We already have the approval and had been operating scheduled flight from KL to Wuhan, thus it is easier to start the route for Miri/Wuhan sector,” he said yesterday at the dialogue session between Malindo Air and tourism players here.
Assistant Minister for Sarawak Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin chaired the dialogue session which was also attended by Miri Mayor Adam Yii and representatives from Malaysia Airports Berhad, chambers of commerce, tour operators and hoteliers.
Bernard added that for new destinations it would take about four months to get approval from the relevant authorities, provided there were no objections from other airlines.
Meanwhile, Lee was happy with the outcome of the dialogue adding that it was a follow up to get Malindo Air to bring in more flights, including international flights to Miri.
“Today Malindo Air meets with our tour operators, hoteliers and the main thing is we want them to work closely with Malindo Air so that when we have more flights to Kuala Lumpur we want to make the flights sustainable so they would not be cancelled six months after operation,” stressed Lee.
Lee said the proposed Miri/Wuhan route is to tap the vast tourism potentials both in China and Miri.
At the moment, he said there is direct flight to Wuhan from KK by AirAsia and from KL to Wuhan by Malindo Air.
