Kota Kinabalu: The State Capital is set to host a tattoo expo later this month, with the organisers hoping that the event will garner a better spotlight for local artists on the international scene.
Sabah Tattoo and Body Arts Association President Andreas Protus Essin said local tattooists would have ample opportunity to collaborate with their foreign counterparts during the Sabah Tattoo Expo 2017.
"We aim to bring local and foreign tattoo artists together to form a unity through their art and culture, at the same time boosting the tourism industry by encouraging visitors to explore the local landscape.
"We also hope that the expo will also help to remove any popular misconceptions the public may have regarding the tattoo community," he said.
He said the event expects to draw around 2,000 participants and tattoo artists from various places such as the peninsula, Sarawak, Sabah, Indonesia and even from Russia.
He added that other activities lined up for the event include a tattoo competition, an "ugly tattoo" contest, tattoo exhibitions and live band performances from different places such as Civil Disorder (Indonesia), Scarlet Heroes (Kuala Lumpur) and Secret Signal (Brunei).
