KOTA KINABALU: A total of 19 countries are expected to participate in the two-day 7th Sabah International Folklore Festival to be held here in July.
Sabah Culture Board Chairman Datuk Wences Angang said the response to the festival was very encouraging, especially from African, European and Asian countries.
“So far, we have received about 40 applications but we have selected only 19 countries due to high costs involved,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the 2nd Sabah Handicraft Festival at Wisma Budaya, here yesterday.
The Political Secretary to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Amisah Yassin officiated at the ceremony on behalf of the minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun.
Also present was General Manager of Sabah Culture Board, Datu Rosmadi Datu Sulai.
Wences said one of the main events of the folklore festival was cultural performance by each participating country.
On the handicraft festival, Wences said 20 ethnic groups showcased local handicrafts as touristic assets for local and foreign tourists.
