Three continents represented in band at Borneo Jazz Festival

KUCHING: A six-piece band comprising members from three continents will take to the stage at the Borneo Jazz 2012 to be held in Miri in May.

Called the Schalk Joubert’s Three Continents Sextet, it features South African-born bass player Schalk Joubert himself, an all girl brass section from Scandinavia, a rhythm section from Africa and a multi-instrumentalist from the United States of America.

A press release from Sarawak Tourism Board said Joubert describes himself as the product of his mixed cultural heritage.

“His influences are the rhythms of Africa and the harmony of Europe. His heart lies in tightly arranged rock/jazz and world music,” it said.

Performing with him on stage will be Stockholm based Karin Hammar, on trombone; San Francisco based multi-instrumentalist, Rich Armstrong; Kevin Gibson, on drums; Oslo based Shannon Mowday, on alto sax and clarinet as well as Melissa van der Spy on the grand piano; and Norwegian, Hildegunn Oiseth on trumpet. All of them are stars in their own right and among themselves have won various awards.

Borneo Jazz 2012 main shows take place in Miri from May 11 to 12. Music lovers are advised not to miss this great group representing music from three continents – Europe, Africa and America.
