KUCHING: The Damai Food Fest on May 11-12 will feature Sarawakian food, sights and sounds all in one place.
The inaugural festival, jointly organised by Damai Beach Resort and villagers from Kampung Santubong, Buntal and Sungai Lumut, will be held at the resort’s poolside area.
There will be some 50 traditional hawker-style stalls selling the best authentic Sarawakian food.
Organising committee chairman and Damai Beach Resort general manager Zulkifli Othman told a press conference yesterday that the event aimed to promote local food and delicacies as well as encourage city folk and tourists to visit Damai Beach more often.
“The food fest will be a good avenue for local folk and their families to have a good weekend by the beach savouring the varied cuisines and delicacies of Sarawak while enjoying a few activities,” he said.
“It will also provide a great opportunity for tourists to try out the flavours of our ethnic food and experience our culture and traditions.”
Held as part of the resort’s community related activities, Zulkifli pointed out that it also aimed to help villagers benefit from the spin-offs of tourism activities.
“We hope that the fest will gradually evolve into an annual culinary tourism event that will be beneficial to Damai folk and the local tourism industry,” he said.
Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) hotels Grand Margherita and Riverside Majestic as well as the Sarawak Cultural Village, will also support the festival by offering their popular signature dishes at hawker prices.
There will also be kampung-style beach activities and games such as coconut bowling and blowpipe competition.
“Other side activities to lighten up the mood include traditional dance and music performances by kampung folk like bergendang, bermukun, joget as well as singing and cooking competitions,” he said.
