Situated on wooden stilts some three metres above the ground, the extensive compound of Royal Mulu Resort nestled within the tropical rainforests of Borneo does surprise initially upon arrival.
The only luxury accommodation to be found within the UNESCO World Heritage site, Royal Mulu Resort offers travellers a comfortable night's rest as well as links with all of the region's ecotourism tour products.
Approaching the property from the airport, travellers are taken down a beaten track and over two bridges in Tuk-Tuks from the local airport, definitely one of the more unique ways to arrive at your accommodations.
188 rooms are found here and admittedly the rooms are a bit tired after 17 years of operation. As I understand, the resort and Marriott Hotels and Resorts have just signed a new contract which will see the global brand place its stamp on the property and already the resort is gearing up for a multi-million dollar renovation.
Currently, the rooms, while comfortable are a little tired, from jungle print bedcovers to cane chairs it's obvious that Marriott will have to take a strong hand in the new decor scheme. The air conditioning and hot water system are also allocated to separate electric grids which mean that they need to be turned on separately before use.
