Mammoth Rajang Basin Theme Park proposed for Sibu

SIBU: Local tourism is expected to get a big boost following the completion of Rajang Basin Theme Park.

Essentially the idea is to get people to walk through the history and culture of this town in a matter of hours.

The conceptual designer for the project, Joseph Ting, said yesterday that Rajang Best Sdn Bhd had a very ambitious plan for the project.

“The ideal site is along the river bank in Pulau Kerto. The company already has 10 acres and is looking for 40 acres more. For this we are seeking help from the Sarawak Tourism Ministry,” he said

Pulau Kerto is about five minutes by speedboat from the local express boat terminal.

Ting, who was vice president of Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Sheda), said it was time for Sibu to have a leisure park.

He strongly believes that the project is the answer.

A notable feature of the park would be a 150-foot or six-storey high statue of the state emblem, the hornbill.

He said upon its completion the hornbill would make it into the Guinness Book of Records as the largest statue of a bird in the world.

Ting, who is a property developer, said the statue would face east.

“The sun rises in the east, and we consider it the light of prosperity for Sibu,” he said.

“Inside the statue is an art gallery exhibiting ancient local handicrafts.

“Numerous old jars, arches, and totem poles will also be displayed.

“There will be a mini zoo for orang utan and different species of hornbills, and we have proposed to create a crocodile pond at the basement.”
