Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival - Timbres of the rainforest

MUSIC and nature lovers will get a double dose of soul-enriching culture and entertainment with the latest instalment of the annual Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in Sarawak, which begins today and runs till Sunday.

The 15th edition of the popular event organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board, will once again see revellers from around the world congregating at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong (45 minutes' drive from Kuching).

Voted as one of the world's Top 25 international festivals, RWMF presents a romantic blend of history and adventure in the rainforest.

Artistes from around the globe will share the stage with indigenous musicians from Borneo to create musical magic in the lakeside setting with Mount Santubong in the background.

The Music Of Sarawak will feature an ensemble of musicians from the Hornbill State, who will showcase the rich diversity of its 27 ethnic groups through exciting cultural and traditional musical performances.

ETHNO FUSION

Those with an ear for more contemporary styles can look out for Sarawakian band Rhythm Of Borneo, that will showcase its brand of ethno fusion mixing rock, funk, pop and jazz with traditional and ethnic elements.
One of the highlights will be Sarawak native Zee Avi, who has made a name for herself in the US. The petite singer-songwriter, who plays the acoustic guitar and ukulele, will perform her laid back tunes from her two albums, Zee Avi and Ghostbird.

Those who want to move to the groove and dance should not miss the energetic performance of Malaysian rhythm ensemble, The Diplomats Of Drum.

Going by its “music without borders” tagline, the band combines a mixture of ethnic rhythms and beats in an improvised and organic manner, featuring instruments like the Australian didgeridoo, African djembes and talking drum, Brazilian repenique and surdos, Malay gendang and rebana, the Indian dhol, sitar and tabla and the Scottish bagpipe.
