Hot weather fails to stop fans from enjoying Sarawak Rainforest Fest

By Maggie Gilbert

KUCHING - The temperature was rising at the 9th Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) but the crowd still showed their support at the finale of the fest held yesterday.

The city, which has not been experiencing good rains except for a short spell on Friday, is living up to its expectations in providing a festive mood for the tourists during the three-day event which began on Friday.

The festival began with workshops in the afternoon from 2pm till 5pm. Locals and tourists who paid RM60 for adult and RM30 for children were given a chance to get a taste of the ethnic and cultural performances from the respective 14 countries that participated in the event.

"The Language of the Tablas" and learning Bollywood dance steps, Sarawak's very own "Kissing Cousins" and "Drones and Pipes" were just some of the workshops that had attracted the crowd.

They learnt almost everything from the flamboyant Bollywood dance steps to stomping with the blowpipes and swaying to the Bidayuh bamboo instruments.

The crowd was seen dancing to the rhythm of the "Les Yeux Noirs" from France, "Calle Sur" from Latin America and "Genticorum" from Canada, who performed last night at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), the venue for the event for the last nine years.
