Borneo Cup set to be a boost for sports tourism in Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: The inaugural Figos Borneo Football Cup, which is scheduled for October and early November, this year here is set to become yet another sporting event that will raise the profile of Sabah in promoting itself as a sports tourism hub in the region.

According to Scott Ollerenshaw, Managing Director of Borneo Sports and Adventure Holidays, which is organising the event, the Borneo Football Cup aims to attract amateur football clubs from throughout the Australasia region to Sabah not only to play football but to experience the State's beauty and many other attractions.

"Sabah has all the requirements needed for sports tourism such as modern sporting facilities, resorts and hotels to suit all budgets and most importantly incredible and amazing tourist attractions that caters for just about everyone," said Ollerenshaw, who was a former football player with the Sabah FA.

He said this to reporters during a press conference to announce the tournament at a leading hotel here, Monday.

He pointed out that dates for the event was set to coincide with the Australian school holidays as they anticipated the number of Australian teams entering the event to grow significantly in the near future.

"Hopefully with any luck there will soon be flights from Australia direct into Kota Kinabalu, which will obviously make it easier to entice more Australian teams into Sabah," he said.
