Sabah Committed To Sustainable Tourism Development

KOTA KINABALU -- Sabah is committed to pursuing sustainable development in tourism, State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun said Thursday.

He said the government fully acknowledged that the state's natural environment, including marine and terrestrial biodiversity, was a great tourism asset for the state.

Therefore, the initiation of the study on an island management plan in the state to ensure continuous competitiveness in the tourism market was timely and appropriate, he said.

"An island management plan is crucial to ensure that island resources continue to be preserved and protected for the future generations.

"This management plan will provide some means of controlling access into and around the natural resources on the islands while coming up with guidelines for development as well as defining the type of development and planning for the island resources," he said in his remarks at the stakeholder consultation workshop for the "Sabah Island Management Plan," here.
