Giam Adventure Tourism - a new adventure and nature tourism product in Kuching launched

KUCHING: Giam Adventure Tourism (GAT), a new adventure and nature tourism product, is poised to become a major income generator for the folks of Kampung Giam.

This innovative package, which was launched by Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit on Friday, among others, takes tourists on a boat to savour the sights of upper Sarawak River and to visit to a cave.

Dawos, who launched the package at Kampung Giam, about 34km from here, said he was pleased with the initiative of the villagers in coming up with GAT.

He said the area had much to offer tourists, and if properly marketed and managed it would increase the income of the locals.

“I always encourage the people to participate in tourism as this sector can give a lucrative income.

“Long gone are the days when we rely on small farming for income.”

Dawos, who is also Mambong MP, said the rivers and river banks had plenty of tourism potential and these must be exploited by the locals.

“We must always think of news ways to earn extra income and not rely on traditional ways. We have tourism products here so we must make full use of it.”
