Lahad Datu: Travellers told to exercise caution visiting East Coast of Sabah

Travellers have been urged to exercise caution when visiting the east coast of Sabah.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said this was because of the ongoing standoff between Malaysia's security forces and the Sulu armed intruders.

“I am not saying the entire Sabah is not safe for tourists. If you want to visit places such as Kota Kinabalu, Pulau Gaya, or Mount Kinabalu - these are okay (safe).

“But please be careful if you need to travel to places like Semporna and Lahad Datu,” Dr Ng told a press conference at the launch of the 4th Malaysia International Shoe Festival 2013 here yesterday.

She acknowledged that the invasion by the self-styled Sulu royal army had somewhat affected tourism to several Sabah destinations.

Meanwhile, six countries and Taiwan have issued travel warnings advising their citizens to stay away from Sabah's eastern coast.
