Fun at Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari held over the weekend


KAPIT: Twenty-six teams participated in various categories of the Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari.

They were the Men’s Bamboo Open, Men’s Bamboo Closed, Free Style, Women Bamboo Closed, new category of the Paddle Boat and Best Decorated Raft.

Organising chairman of Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari, Fedrick John George, said the main tourism event for Kapit is normally held on the second weekend of April, but postponed due to the 13th General Election on May 5.

The first leg of the Oct 5 race was from Rumah Undi, Sungai Bena to Rumah Juntan, Nanga Elik, Sungai Sut and from Rumah Juntan to Kapit Terminal on Oct 6.

The annual event of the Ministry of Tourism Sarawak was more grandthis year to mark Sarawak’s 50th anniversary of Independence.

Side events included ‘Pesta Kapit’, regatta, ‘pekitrakit’, traditional games, exhibition booths and handicraft sales.

Kapit Division Power Boat Association organised the regatta – the main attractions being the HP outboard boat races, Kayak 1 Malaysia and paddling event for six to eight paddlers – with RM41,500 in cash prizes and challenge trophies up for grabs.

Prizes in the Men’s Open and Paddle Boat category were RM3,000 (first), RM2,500 (second) and RM1,500 (third) and consolation prize of RM800 for fourth to 10th places.

Trophies went to the top three winners in all categories.
