Tamparuli echoes with sounds of bamboo music

TAMPARULI: The sound and music from bamboo instruments serenading through the Tun Hamdan Hall here yesterday, children and adults pitted themselves at the 11th Bamboo Music Festival.

The programme, under the auspices of the Kinabalu Ochestra Bamboo Music Association (OMBAK), was aim to instill the spirit of appreciation among students and the community in Sabah’s traditional music arts.

A National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) official, Mohd Zanidizam Mohd Dila, said they wanted to create awareness among the younger generation as well as to motivate them to engage more in creative arts industry.

“We hope that this programme will be able to cultivate and instill solidarity among the people, especially youths who have the passion for bamboo musical instruments and its arts,” he told New Sabah Times when met here yesterday.

The competition offered three categories including primary school, secondary school and open category. Three primary schools, seven secondary schools and four open categories groups have participated in the competition.

Sabah Tourism Board encourages development of Sabah’s tourism products

TAMPARULI: Sabah Tourism Board will continue to provide encouragement and provide for efforts to develop tourism products in Sabah.

Its chairman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the board would always support interesting events that are not available in other countries.

“When we talk about attracting foreign tourists, surely we want to present a tourism product that is unique and not found in other countries,” he said.

Joniston told reporters after attending Bambusia Gala Nite in conjunction with the Bamboo Arts Festival organised by the Kinabalu Bamboo Music Orchestra (OMBAK) and several agencies at Dewan Tun Hamdan, here on Wednesday.

He said Bamboo Arts Festival was one such event that could be developed as a tourism product to attract tourists to Tamparuli and Sabah in general.

Joniston said as an initial step, the Sabah Tourism Board was considering to help promote the Bamboo Arts Festival through existing networks such as website and tourism offices locally and abroad and embassies.

“We want to make this event bigger and be known to the public not only in the country but also overseas as the goal is to attract tourists.

“We really want to see Bamboo Arts Festival to become a major tourist attraction not only in Tamparuli or Tuaran district but in Sabah and Malaysia,” he added.

Bamboo Festival 2014: Native music deserves recognition

 

TAMPARULI: Native music deserves greater recognition as it is an integral part of Sabah’s priceless cultural heritage, said Tourism, Environment and Culture Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.

“Traditional music, including the various songs and dances has helped bring people together and forms a vital part of way of life especially among Sabah’s diverse ethnic communities,” he said in his speech at the Bamboo Festival 2014 here yesterday.

The text of his speech was delivered by Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai who is also Sabah Tourism Board chairman.

He also pointed out that the promotion of native music is crucial to ensure its survival and preservation for the future generations.

Masidi noted that Sabah native music has a distinctive, unique sound which has gained international recognition through various cultural shows.

“It is vital that we give full support to the endeavours in preserving and developing the traditional music,” he said, stressing the need to teach and inspire the young people to play, compose and perform traditional music.

Sabah Tourism Upcoming Event: Bamboo Music Festival, Tamparuli

The mention of bamboo being used to manufacture beer, diapers, perfume and even antiseptic may raise an eyebrow or two. But in Sabah, this multi-purpose and readily renewable resource is most famous for producing wind and percussion instruments such as the sompoton (bamboo aerophone), bungkau (jaw harp) and seruling (flute).

Dance away at the Dewan Tun Hamdan, Tamparuli on 25 November as the famed Kinabalu Bamboo Orchestra takes centre stage. And cheer on participants of the creative solo, group and monogunggak (bamboo idiophone) competitions. Outdoor activities include the bamboo raft and house model building contests, and the rampanau (bamboo stilt-walking) race.
