Promenade Hotel Bintulu officially opens

BINTULU: Promenade Hotel Bintulu was officially opened by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem during a grand opening ceremony yesterday.

Among those present were his wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and wife Dato Sri Empiang Jabu, Double Dynasty Group of Companies managing director Tan Sri Yee Ming Seng and several assistant ministers and their wives.

Promenade Hotel Bintulu chief operating officer Alex Cham said Promenade Hotel Sdn Bhd’s maiden hospitality business began with the opening of Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu Sabah 17 years ago, which now operates as the corporate headquarters.

“Since then, it has successfully achieved its business vision to manage and operate a chain of Promenade Hotels in Tawau Sabah, Fujian China and now in Bintulu and another hotel is in the pipeline,” he said.

Promenade Hotel Bintulu has an inventory of 188 rooms and suites that are elegantly styled with a creative twist in its choice of colours plus a host of contemporary features such as the ingenious use of natural lighting and mirrors to give the feeling of warmth and spaciousness.

“In conjunction with the grand opening of Promenade Hotel Bintulu, we are pleased to extend our special introductory rates from RM168 nett and above, which includes breakfast,” said Cham.

He added since the soft opening last September 9, this 8-storey business class hotel had been consistently enjoying excellent occupancy rate of 80 per cent.

Promenade Hotel Bintulu’s soft launch sees 100 rooms fully taken up

Promenade Hotel Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer Adrian Wei officiated at the soft launch yesterday, checking in as its first room guest at the reception counter.

Located in the heart of that bustling new township of Bintulu Sentral, Promenade Bintulu is very much a personification of the forces of nature brought to life through an amalgamation of contemporary ideas.

Such energy radiates from the polished doorsteps to the opulent marble flooring and granite reception counter in the grand lobby – all bathed in natural light.

Agrotourism can generate lucrative income to Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The recently concluded Malaysia International Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro Tourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2012, which recorded 3.2 million visitors, showed that this industry has a huge potential to grow.

Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) director Burhanuddin Saidin said the tourism industry had also contributed to the national productivity growth.

“With the higher number of tourist arrivals, it will also increase domestic consumption, such as accommodation, food and beverage. It recorded a 4.1 per cent increase in 2011.

“Talking about agrotourism, it has a great potential to generate lucrative income to Sabah and continuous effort is being undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry to further enhance the state’s agrotourism, which would benefit the tourism sector in general,” he said at the launching of a six-day seminar on Innovative Strategies in Promoting Agrtotourism at Promenade Hotel here yesterday.

He added among the various agrotourism products that have been developed by the ministry through its departments and agencies include the Sabah Agriculture Park, the Tagal System, Weston Wetlands Park, Keningau Livestock Farm and various other agricultural activities like the mushroom industry in Mesilau, goat rearing in Papar and bee farming in Matunggong which have already been developed as part of the agro-tourism packages.

He believed the corporation has managed to change the people’s perception that agriculture is no longer a sector for the poor or uneducated, but open to all with the promise of lucrative profits.

“Therefore, today’s programme is a perfect platform for us in Malaysia to learn and understand how other countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Holland and our neighbour, Thailand, craft their strategies in developing and promoting agro tourism,” he added.

In line with changing expectations for the country to be more innovative and creative, MPC has aligned itself to meet the challenging demands as outlined in the New Economic Model (NEM) and to accelerate the nation’s transformation in areas of productivity and innovation, and support the aspirations of the nation to achieve a high income economy.

MPC’s new direction is reflected in the newly set up of five department models which focus on the drive for higher productivity growth.

The departments are Regulatory Review, Enterprise Innovation, Knowledge Management, Business Excellence and Global Competitiveness. He added that in the Tenth Malaysia Plan 2011 to 2015, MPC is entrusted to review business regulations for competitiveness.

Sabah tourism association urged to be creative

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Environment has urged the Sabah Association of Tour & Travel Agents (Satta) to be more creative in repackaging their tourism products.

“Sabahans are creative people and we should look into packaging our products in the tourism industry from another perspective and make use of whatever alternatives we have to continue attracting tourists to Sabah,” he said.

Its minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said this in his address during the Satta “Get Together” Night 2012 held at Promenade Hotel here Friday night.

He said what we had lost in one area of the tourism industry, we should try to make up in another area and this is where our concerted efforts as a team can make the difference at this trying time.

“We should all consider ourselves as players in one field. The ministry, Satta, Matta and the other tourism players should work together to create results in minimising the effects of the suspension of the direct routes to Sabah on the regional network by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) starting early this year,” the minister stated.

He said the government is grateful to Satta who had worked very hard to promote the tourism industry in the State.

“We acknowledged and appreciated the role played by Satta who had continuously brought in tourists from other regions to Sabah via other means despite the hard times we are going through,” he added.

Touching on the cancellation of the direct routes from Sabah to South Korea and Japan by MAS, Masidi said the national airlines had incurred big losses last year.

Hotel Promenade Opens in Tawau

Tawau: Hotel Promenade conducted its "soft" opening Thursday as part of the effort by Sabah Urban Development Corporation (SUDC) to enhance better development, exploring the various potentials of the district.

SUDC Managing Director Haji Abu Bakar M Yahya who was the first official guest at the hotel following the soft opening, told a press conference that Tawau was chosen for the project due to the vibrant economy that could help boost the prospects of building a four-star hotel, a shopping complex and condominium lots, located some 1.5km from the town centre.

He expressed optimism that Tawau should be able to accommodate the three ambitious projects.

Abu Bakar also said Promenade was chosen due to their credibility in managing business in the hotel industry, and believed that the facility would be able to cater the needs of guests from nearby towns as well as neigbouring countries bordering the district.

At the same time, the three establishments would continue to generate more jobs for the local people here, he said.

Abu Bakar added the hotel might utilise 63 of its total 180 rooms, until it is fully completed by May, this year.

Kota Kinabalu Tadau Kaamatan Carnival May 10-12

Kota Kinabalu: City Hall and the Royal Malaysian Police are jointly organising the City Tadau Kaamatan Carnival at Lintasan Deasoka, here, from May 10 to 12.

In the run-up to the carnival, several programmes have been lined up such as the City-level Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Carnival 2007.

According to City Hall Public Relations Officer Syron A. Tunggolou, participation is still open, until May 4, for the preliminary rounds to select 15 finalists at Promenade Hotel and not the Community Centre as stated in the entry form.

Kota Kinabalu’s seventh year as a city

Fireworks lighted the skies on Feb 1 as Kota Kinabalu folk celebrated the seventh anniversary of the state capital’s city status.

The 15-minute pyrotechnic display brought cheers and applause from the 10,000 crowd that included Sabah Yang DiPertua Negri Tun Ahamadshah Abdullah and Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman.

The event and festivities were held at the seaside Promenade Boulevard.

The evening’s programme got underway with a parade of colourfully lighted floats from various departments including Sabah Railways, Yayasan Sabah, City Hall and various shopping centres.

Among the highlights of the evening were performances by international cultural troupes from Australia, South Africa, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea and China as well as a group from the Kuching North City Hall.
