Time to review syllabus for tourist guides: Sarawak Tourist Body

MIRI: Sarawak Tourist Guide Association (STGA) feels it is time for the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage to review the syllabus for tourist guides, which is mostly based on products and places in the peninsula and therefore not applicable to Sarawak.

Its chairman Abang Azahari Abang Zaidan told reporters this at the closing of the Localised Nature Guide course held at Borneo Tropical Rainforest Resort in Lambir here.

According to Azahari, Sarawak Tourist Guide Association has written to the ministry with the proposal for review of the syllabus.

“Although the licence (City Guide Certificate) enables one to conduct guiding service throughout the country, we feel there is a need for Sarawak to be included in the syllabus as most products featured are in Langkawi and Johore among others,” he said.

“As for Sarawak, most of our products are mainly around the culture, adventure and nature (CAN) concept as most of them are in remote and rural areas. With this in mind, we feel it is time for Ministry of Tourism and Heritage to review the syllabus,” he said, adding that it will also be in line with 1Malaysia concept.
