Pool resources to develop tourism industry in Kuching

KUCHING: Four local governments namely Padawan Municipal Council, Serian District Council, Bau District Council and Lundu District Council will soon pool their resources to develop the tourism industry in their areas of jurisdiction.

A suggestion to this effect came from Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at a dinner of Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) Wednesday, who said that if the four local councils could work together they could offer tourists a wide variety of attractions ranging from nature to culture and adventure.

“Lundu has clear blue sea next to a national park. Bau’s attractions include the former gold mines and caves. Padawan has Borneo Highland and Annah Rais (longhouse) while Serian has its border town.

“If you regard all these areas as one and sell it to the outside world, even tourists from Kuching alone is enough to set the momentum to further develop tourism in the area,” he said.

All they needed was a ‘bigger’ council to lead the team and the Chief Minister suggested that PMC offered itself as the leader to take up the challenge.

“PMC has enough experience. If you (PMC) are willing to take up the challenge, I will help you to prepare a plan for implementation next year,” said Taib, who is also Finance Minister.

Urging the three councils to work together with PMC, Taib said he wanted the master plan to be forwarded to the state government by end of this year, at the latest.

He also urged PMC to recommend to the state government those suitable people to work out the plan.

“If everything is successful with you (four councils) the master plan could be copied by other local councils in the state,” he added.
