Sipadan - Dancing with the devil in the deep blue sea

We've been a bit naughty.

In the dying breaths of this great adventure, we wanted to do something really cool.

With diving being en vogue, we had searched for prime dive sites in and around Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

One site came up trumps, and that was Sipadan. Voted as one of the best dive sites in the world, we didn't want to miss our chance at seeing this tropical aquatic paradise.

The problem was, well, pirates. Unfortunately, in this part of the world, around the Eastern coast of Sabah, Borneo, there have been a number of piracy incidents, which have led to the the odd kidnapping.

However, as there was no travel ban in place and the last recorded incident was over a year ago... and it is The Best Diving In The World, we figured we'd be fine and booked into a very well rated dive resort... We're delighted we did.

We arrived on Mabul, an island 1 hours boat ride from Semporna, near Tawau in eastern Sabah.

We pulled up in crystal clear waters to little chalets built on stilts, and a beautiful sandy beach, behind which our resort was nestled.

We had decided that in our last few days of diving, we would gain a further qualification to enable us to dive to deeper depths, and so we rocked up, and booked onto the Advanced Open Water Diver course.
