KUCHING: The much anticipated Lawas Festival, scheduled from May 25 to 27, is expected to lure more than 130,000 visitors to Lawas town with more programmes and side events.
Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the annual programme is to further promote Lawas, as the town has great tourism potential.
Awang Tengah, who was speaking during the ‘Selamat Pagi Malaysia’ programme to announce the Lawas Festival at Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) Marketing Expo and ‘Gegar Olimpik 2012’ yesterday, said various activities have been lined up for the festival to attract visitors from outside the town.
“We are expecting visitors from Brunei, Labuan, Sabah and Kalimantan to participate in the festival programmes. This is a trend that we saw last year, where an estimated 100,000 visitors thronged Lawas town.
“Those from outside Lawas can learn a thing or two about the culture of the people, and get a taste of the ‘infamous’ Ikan
Tahai or locally known as ‘dadah’, a local dish that was a favourite of our Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud,” said Awang Tengah.
Among the programmes lined up are float and lantern procession, stage performances by various famous artistes and fireworks display. However, the traditional buffalo race will not be held this year.
