World Harvest Festival to be celebrated on May 26-27 at Sarawak Cultural Village

KUCHING: The World Harvest Festival (WHF) 2012 will be held on May 26 and 27 at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV).

World Harvest Festival is a gathering of paddy-planting communities of the world. It is a place for locals and tourists to learn about the ethnic groups’ culture and arts, said assistant minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip at a press conference at Kubah Ria on Wednesday.

World Harvest Festival is held to create a colourful and vibrant ethnic festival as a prelude to the state-wide Gawai Dayak celebration which is celebrated in June annually.

“This year, the organiser has invited several dance and music performers like Kumpulan Giring-Giring Bambu from Indonesia, Kumpulan Jo’oh Mah Meri Sungai Bumbun, Selangor and Sungai Asap Cultural Group to celebrate the festival,” said Talib.

The artistes will be presenting a cultural concert with interactive dance and music workshops, he said.

This year’s theme play is entitled ‘The Adventures of Keling and Kumang’ and is based on an Iban legend with scenes enlivened by theatrical effects in an outdoor natural setting fronting a lake, he added.

The play introduces Keling as a hero who finds his true love in Kumang after enduring and overcoming a series of obstacles.

Another crowd puller, the Miss World Harvest Festival 2012 ethnic beauty pageant will see beauties presenting their talent, grace and beauty in colourful traditional Iban costumes and accessories.

The Ironman World Harvest Festival 2012 competition on the other hand will see 15 finalists going through various tasks to test their skills and strength.

They will be lifting gunnysacks weighing around 50kg, climbing Mount Santubong, shooting blowpipes, de-husking coconuts with their bare hands as well as other traditional based activities.
