516 conquer Mount Santubong over Merdeka weekend

KUCHING: A total of 516 avid mountaineers climbed Mount Santubong here in conjunction with Malaysia Day last weekend.

The activity was jointly organised by Kuching Extreme Activities Club (KALK) and the Department of Youth and Sports.

Razali Mohammad who is the Youth and Sports state director officiated at the ceremony’s opening event.

“This is one of the activities we organise for everybody who enjoys doing extreme sports. In this event, most of the contestants are tested on their mental and physical durability and strength to the limit in conquering this legendary mountain,” said Doni Sahari who is president of KALK.

Participants had to first register at SMK Santubong on the first day for their safety and spent a night at the top of the mountain.

“I am very happy with the reception and support for this event.

“Initially, we had 667 people registered for the event but we had to turn some of the registrations down for various reasons,” added Doni.
