Sarawak Regatta - Kuching City’s yearly splash bash

It’s an exciting weekend here for tourists, water-sport enthusiasts and the public, as it’s that time of the year again for the iconic Sarawak Regatta.

Braving the hot sun, thousands flocked to Kuching Waterfront to see the city’s beloved annual series of boat races and other water-sport activities.

This year’s Sarawak Regatta took off with much fanfare, with over 320 teams consisting of 6,353 paddlers vying for the title of Raja Sungai, or King of the River along the entire 2,000m stretch of the course in the Sarawak River.

Families with their children could be seen camped out on the stretches of grass along the waterfront, with some even bringing their own tents to keep out the sun.

A carnival-like atmosphere filled the entire waterfront, with a variety of stalls lining the sidelines selling everything from traditional handicraft to food and drinks.

Held in conjunction with the Science and Innovation Carnival this year, visitors were also treated to an entire slew of galleries, exhibitions and performances showcasing the latest technological wonders at the regatta.
