KOTA KINABALU: A musical medley by a “bamboo orchestra” and prayers performed by the Kadazan-dusun high priestesses for the rice spirits showcased Sabah’s rich ethnic cultures and traditions at the closing of the state-level Kaamatan celebrations.
The orchestra played various traditional and modern tunes to thrill the audience, who also witnessed the traditional magavao or thanksgiving ceremony performed by the priestesses or Bobohizans to appease the padi spirits for a bountiful harvest.
The month-long Kaamatan or harvest celebrations which kicked off on May 1 came to an official close when Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah cut the padi stalk at the Kadazandusun and Murut cultural grounds in Penam-pang, near here, yesterday.
Joining him were Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman, Kadazandusun Huguan Siou (Paramount Leader) Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan and other Kadazandusun leaders including Tan Sri Bernard Dompok and Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.
