Water taxi may bring uniqueness to Sarawak tourism

KUCHING: People in the city, especially tourists, will soon enjoy the uniqueness of Sarawak’s tourism when the water taxi begins its operations.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said plans for the water taxi operations had almost reached its implementation stage.

Johari said the water taxi, to be operated by a private company, would become a reality faster than many had expected.

“If all goes well, I believe we will see a new product for tourism in Sarawak called the ‘water taxi’ soon,” he told reporters here yesterday.

According to Johari, the water taxi will begin at Kubah Ria near the Satok Bridge, and from there it will travel along the Sarawak River until the Borneo Convention Centre located at Jalan Bako.

Johari assured that the water taxi operation would not affect ‘perahu tambang’, the traditional transportation across the Sarawak River.
