1 million tourists visited Labuan in 2012

LABUAN: Almost 1 million tourists visited Labuan in 2012 and 29 per cent were foreign visitors (271,183) said the secretary of Tourism Licensing Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Kudratullah Fatimy Afandi.

He said this in a speech at the national-level Water Festival Closing Ceremony in conjunction with the 17th Labuan International Sea Challenge (LISC) at the Labuan International Water Sports Complex near here on Sunday.

The event was officiated by Labuan Member of Parliament, Rozman Datuk Isli. Also present was assemblyman, Senator Datuk Yunus Kurus.

Kudratullah said Labuan now has 36 hotels with a total of 1,685 rooms, and the amount is expected to increase with the completion of several more hotels by the year’s end, adding that the Ministry of Tourism and Culture is working to promote Labuan as one of the top tourism destinations in the country.

“This will ensure that Labuan will not be left out of Visit Malaysia Year 2014 next year,” he said.

On a national level, Kudratullah noted that the number of international visitors last year numbered at 25 million and generated an income of RM60.6 billion.

In 2014, the government is hoping to register 28 million tourist arrivals with an estimated income of RM76 billion.
