Lawas to get bigger airport

KUCHING: Lawas might see better air connectivity soon as proposal for a larger airport is under consideration under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

Revealing this piece of news at a press conference after attending the  ‘Selamat Pagi Malaysia’ show at Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) studio yesterday, Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said a suitable location had been identified for the new airport.

“I had been making the request to the Federal government for quite some time as we realised a larger airport would definitely bring benefits with better connectivity to the people in Lawas and
the surrounding areas,” said Tengah.

“The request was forwarded to our Prime Minister who responded positively by saying that it will be a priority under the Tenth Malaysia Plan.

“The government realises that with the new airport, Lawas can serve to better connect the people in the surrounding areas such as Brunei, Sabah and Kalimantan,” he added.

He said the proposed new airport should at least be able to accommodate an ATR plane, as the current one can only accommodate the Fokker.
