Taking Sarawak tourism sector to next level

KUCHING: Tourism players need to be more creative and innovative in developing the industry and taking it to the next level, said Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit.

Dawos told reporters this when asked to comment on the disappointment expressed by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud over the performance of the tourism industry.

“How are we going to develop the industry if there is a lack of creativity and innovation among the players?

“The players need to know how to make this industry more attractive and exciting by utilising all the special features available in this state to ensure tourists enjoy their stay and do not get bored here,” said the deputy minister.

On Friday, Taib said it would be sad for Sarawak if it could not capitalise on its rich and diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

“As we all know, Sarawak has about 30 ethnic groups and each of them has its own lifestyle, which will be of interest to the other communities.

“I believe if we really promote such products to the other parts of the world, many people will surely want to visit Sarawak,” the Chief Minister said.

Dawos, who is also Mambong MP, pointed out that there are many interesting destinations and tourist attractions that can be upgraded and further promoted.

“There are so many interesting destinations that can attract the tourists, and it is up to the operators on how they can play their part in introducing and promoting these places to the tourists.
