Tap Sarawak homestays for tourism


KUCHING: Sarawakians must strive to be proactive and creative, especially in promoting the state’s vast culture and heritage to tourists.

Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said there were strategies that could be adopted to share these unique offerings with foreigners.

“Most people know that Sarawak is among the states that have many races. The racial differences were not a choice. It came naturally. This is the potential to tap to grow the tourism sector,” he said at the Darul Islam Belimbing Homestay Gawai celebration at Kampung Belimbing Padawan yesterday.

Nazri said he had been to many places, such as the Bidayuh villages here (Kpg Belimbing Padawan), Annah Rais and Gumbang.

“Although they are Bidayuhs who are Christians, what they practised as their customs is similar to those practised by Bidayuhs who are Muslims.

He advised more Kampung Belimbing Padawan folk to participate in the homestay programme.

Currently, there are 22 homestays at Kampung Belimbing Padawan.

“The income from homestay in Sarawak is about RM3 million in 2015. This is a big number.
