Santubong festival to feature Penan bags and baskets


KUCHING: Beautiful Penan bags and baskets will be available at the Santubong Nature Festival today and tomorrow (Nov 8-9).

Proceeds from the sale of the bags and baskets priced between RM20 and RM90, as well as any donations made will go to HelpingHands Penan – a charitable group that helps to improve Penan livelihoods.

The festival at Permai Rainforest Resort will offer indoor and outdoor activities such as talks, guided walks and children’s activities. It is held by the Malaysian Nature Society-Kuching Branch (MNSKB) with Permai Rainforest Resort in collaboration with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

The festival is supported by Sarawak Museum, Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Geoscience and Minerals Department, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, Sultan Iskandar Planetarium, Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), Ika Picture House, Ibec of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and Society of Wilderness (SOW).

Festival-goers with usable items such as clothes, toys, shoes and stationery can donate them to the HelpingHands Penan’s booth.

MNS Kuching Branch, WWF-Malaysia, Hearts Treasures, Sarawak Museum, Geoscience and Minerals Department, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, Sultan Iskandar Planetarium, SSPCA and E-Mart will also have booths. Besides informative exhibits and reading materials, exhibitors have a wide range of merchandise for sale such as T-shirts, books, postcards, paper jewellery, hand-crafted notepads, and reusable shopping bags.
