Sarawak Regatta on Sept 7 and 8

KUCHING: In the lead up to Sarawak’s 50th year of independence and formation of Malaysia, various national and state-level events will be held from August to September, such as the famed Sarawak Regatta along the historic Sarawak River.

A press release issued by the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) yesterday said the formation of Malaysia saw Sarawak and Sabah gain independence from the British and come Sept 16, both will celebrate their 50th year of independence.

“History tells of warring tribes who fought one another to the death over territory, pride and historical enmity. To divert such lusty energy away from violence, the colonial authorities created a river race of war boats or longboats, and made it an event of peace and to celebrate the rowing prowess of the different tribes,” it said.

Thus was born the Sarawak Regatta, forever an important part of Sarawak culture for its role in ending tribal hostilities and bringing harmony to Sarawak, it added.

An annual affair in the month of September, the Sarawak Regatta attracts more than 6,000 paddlers who compete for the title of ‘Raja Sungai’ (River King) and bragging rights till the next race.

This year, the Sarawak Regatta will feature a Dragon Boat Exhibition Race with participation from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.
