7th edition of Redeems Gawai Carnival to be bigger

KUCHING:  The seventh edition of Redeems Gawai Carnival this June 29-30 has promised to be bigger and more exciting to attract some 10,000 visitors.

The Gawai Carnival Redeems 2012 (GCR12), held in conjunction with the centre’s 15th anniversary, will be themed ‘Sua Ngajah Nyiam’ which means ‘join in the race, chase and be like others’.

Redeems president who is also Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie explained that this year’s theme wanted the Bidayuh community to be pro-active, to participate in the development wave and be on par with other societies.

“Join in the bandwagon of change, don’t be left behind,” Nansian who is also Assistant Minister for Community Services told a press conference held at his office at Batu Kawah new township here yesterday.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is slated to officiate at the event during its grand dinner on June 30. A group of exchange students from the United States are amongst the special guests at the dinner.

Among the main feature of the two-day Gawai festival at the centre located at Singai, Bau near here is the scrambler motorcycle stunt show from 3 pm to 4 pm on both days.

Stunts will be performed by experienced motorcross riders from the nation’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to the stunt show, licensed distributor DNC Asiatic Holdings Sdn Bhd is offering discounts to those booking their motorcycles at their sales booth at the carnival. Visitors can also participate in a lucky draw to win a DTM 150 Demak motorcycle priced at RM7,000.

Nansian added that the reserve army service (askar wataniah) would be holding an exhibition and recruitment drive.

He revealed that not many people had signed up for the army reserve unit. In promoting the service, he said youths and young adults should be encouraged to enlist as training is conducted every year with RM1,200 monthly allowance.

Those enlisted in the reserve do not need to leave their jobs during the training stint as they are considered part-time recruits and the programme is endorsed by the government.

In addition to its annual beauty pageant, the carnival will introduce a special pageantry for married women. Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib had been slated to crown the ‘Dayung Sikora’ (fairest of them all).
