Gawai celebrated on moderate scale

MIRI: The first day of Gawai Dayak was celebrated on a moderate scale in urban areas here this year.

The celebration this year seemed a little quieter and ‘slower’ than the previous years, said SPDP Women Exco assistant secretary Florince Christy when asked by thesundaypost for her comments yesterday.

“That is, if my observation is of any indication,” she added.

Florince believed one of the contributing reasons was that many Dayaks had gone back to their villages to celebrate the occasion.

The long school holidays also gave them another reason to return to the villages to have a livelier Gawai.

For urban Dayaks, the festival was celebrated on a moderate scale where families, friends and relatives gather for open houses.

“With great stability in the country, open houses are encouraged and practised. All are welcome to share and experience together the festive joy with the Dayaks who are mostly known for their hospitality in ensuring that guests enjoy the food and drink even till they drop,” Florince said in jest.

When asked, she replied that cupcakes and ‘Kek Lapis Sarawak’ (Sarawak layer cakes) were a `must’ for most of the urbanites.
